Assuming that there are no fractures nor torn ligamentous tissues (which would require emergency intervention) the first step is RICE treatment method (see: http://www.lucidforce.com/selection/trauma.htm).  Second, dependent upon the type and amount of activities your daughter performs on a daily basis, her level of discomfort will vary. When an ankle is sprained the joint is stressed in a manner that causes shearing of the ligaments that hold the many bones of the ankle together. The damage will vary based upon the severity of the trauma ( i.e. getting kicked, rolling the ankle while jumping, rolling the ankle while running, compaction of the foot, etc.). From my clinical experience, the typical mechanism of ankle injury often occurs prior to the actual sprain. The muscles that protect the joint and allow for normal motion are compromised in some way allowing for aberrant motion. The major movers (muscles) of the ankle joint are located in the calf (which probably explains the pain n the calf). The most basic home remedy for relieving that discomfort at home would be stabilization via a good ankle brace/support (such as this: Lightweight Elastic Ankle Support) and the RICE treatment method for the first two days, followed by intermittent heat and ice at 15 min intervals after any periods of extended. Additionally, massaging the muscles of the calf may help improve the range of motion and reduce any swelling as well. I would also recommend visiting a chiropractor trained in Applied Kinesiology or sports injury treatments. They are experts at identification and manipulation of the extra-spinal joints and musculature to restore proper motion and proprioception. Identification and correction of aberrant joint function can help speed the recovery process and prevent future injury.
