I am assuming that by “pushing harder,” you mean force. Well, Chiropractic (including the work of AK docs) can be split into three parts: Science, Art, and Philosophy. The Philosophy of AK as a tool for diagnosis can be expressed as an Art in many different ways (depending on the practitioner). If one doc pushes “harder” than another, it may be that particular doc’s comfort level in assessing the function of that particular primary mover or muscle group. Where one doc is comfortable assessing the “lock” of a muscle with very light pressure, others may prefer to assess it with more force. Additionally, some docs will use more force to exemplify the inadequacy of muscle function to aid the patient in understanding what is going on. But, ultimately the rationale for the methods of others remains a mystery to me as well (you can try asking them). You can have ten chefs cook you breakfast with ten different results.

The difference between myself and other AK docs is that I let your body and your history tell me what the problems are. This happens in two ways:

1-As you provide me with a history of your presenting symptoms, I formulate several culprits behind your dysfunction. Then through examination of your body (orthopedic tests, muscle tests, reflexes, blood pressure, and pulse), I can start to narrow down which one of the culprits might be the cause of your problems.

2-As I stated above, taking into account what you and your body tell me, I can narrow it down to 1-3 likely culprits, however only time will tell which was indeed the true provoker. So, I fix what I find and let you know what I think is going on only after I see how your body responds to the treatment for whichever culprit(s) seemed most likely.

This process can be very quick (1-3 visits) or can take time (3+ visits). Once the causative factor is found, it takes effort on your part and my part together to maintain your health.

Supplementation is a necessary part of treating the body as a whole. However, it is meant to be supplemental to a treatment, and to your diet. It is my philosophy that whole food supplementation (meaning adjustments to your diet) is the ideal method to provide nutritional support. This does not mean I don’t prescribe supplements, just that when I can, I will recommend changes in the diet rather than supplementation. However, that is on a case by case basis. That being said I have many patients who do not take supplements. I hope you find the answers you seek in this post, and if you have any further question, please do not hesitate to contact me personally.
