Weight Loss

               There are several important concepts to understand with respect to weight loss, and weight gain as well.  

  1. Large sudden changes in weight are not healthy.  Patients are frequently screened for this as a sign of disease.

  2. Your body goes through a great deal of stress when you starve yourself to cut calories.  It's the quality of the food, more so than the quantity, that will trim your body or allow you to gain muscle mass.  Your body needs energy to survive, and food is the primary source of that energy.  This means eat, but not excessively.

  3. Water does not cause you to gain weight.  It really has the opposite effect.  Soda and juice contain carbohydrates (the body treats them as food) and are not a viable source of water.  These types of beverages, along with coffee, tea, beer, wine, and liquor, do not count as sources for water.  They tend to dehydrate the body, so moderation or elimination of  these beverages is highly advised.

  4. All carbohydrates are not the enemy.  There has been a lot of attention placed on limiting the amount of carbohydrates we ingest.  A diet high in refined carbohydrates is the culprit behind many of our health woes.  Fruits and vegetables contain carbohydrates, but these carbs are easily digested by our bodies, whereas the carbs in breads & pastas require our body to expend energy to break down and absorb.

  5.
