Posture Correction- How to achieve the
results you want with three basic steps:
1) Correction of
subluxations (improper
alignment or motion) of the spine. 2)
Support of correction, such as orthotic braces or
exercises to stabilize supportive musculature.
3) Retraining and restoring proper curvature.
The first goal of posture correction is to seek care for
any dysfunction of the joints of your body. This
includes
subluxations of the spine, ribs, and extremities.
Muscle imbalances should also be addressed as well as
proper firing patterns of your muscles in gait (walking).
The length of time required in this stage varies dependent
upon the stage of degeneration of your spine and the other
joints of your body. Chiropractors are trained to
assess these types of dysfunctions and treat them
accordingly. As specialists of the musculoskeletal
and nervous systems, chiropractors are the most
appropriate doctors to address your needs throughout the
correction process. You may find that chiropractors
trained in
Applied
Kinesiology or Sports Chiropractic
provide care more specific to all the joints of
your body as they have additional post-graduate training
in assessment and function of the entire body.
The second phase and third phase of
restoration are also dependent upon the health of your
spine and other joints. Support the care of your
chiropractor by using recommended orthotic braces and
exercises to support proper biomechanical function of your
body. Continued posture correction should combine
retraining of the muscles that support your joints as well
as retraining and restoring proper curvature. Your
doctor will recommend (please feel free to Ask
Dr. Robles
about any concerns specific to you) exercises and/or
support devices to provide any additional support your
body needs while your body recovers from chronic aberrant
joint proprioception. Devices I recommend during
this phase of posture correction are as follows:
Hyperkyphotic Thoracic Spine (a hump or
hunched upper back area):
Posture Corrector,
Cincher or
Cinchim,
or a
Clavicle Splint
Hypolordotic Cervcal Spine (military neck
or chronic anterior head carriage):
Posture Pump® Cervical Spine
Trainer® or
Full Spine Posture Pump®
Structurally speaking, when there is one
"bad" curve or dysfunctional area of spinal posture, there
is typically dysfunction in at least one other area of the
spine. My clinical experience with patients desiring
posture correction and knowledge of the body's
biomechanics has lead me to the following conclusion:
If you don't treat and retrain all dysfunctional
areas of the spine, restoration of proper posture can be
severely impeded.

Humans move around on two feet (except in
extremely rare cases). The pressure of gravity on
the body is responsible for the natural curves of our
spine. The curves distribute the force of gravity so that no
one area of the spine bears too much burden.
Lifestyle, work, and play place additional demands on our
spine. Whether we are planting seeds, working at a
computer, or answering phones; the repetitive stress on the
curves of our spine can cause changes in the shape and
function of our spine. Corrective Care is not possible for all
patients. However, for those patients where Corrective Care is still an option,
the extra time, money and effort they spend now may help
them avoid an early road to aging, years of hunched
,stiff, painful posture and potential spinal surgery. Stiffness and hunched posture makes even young people
look and feel old. Premature aging of the neck and
back will always occur when the spine buckles forward or
is locked to one side. People notice! Too
often chronic use of pain killers and muscle relaxants are
used to numb the body to the degenerative process
occurring, essentially hiding progressive spinal disease.
While Corrective Care in your case may not take the 2-4
years required to straighten other bones such as the teeth, it does require
patient participation, especially with home care
appliances and exercise.
To straighten teeth and reshape the mouth,
orthodontists apply pressure-over-time. Forcing the
teeth in a desired direction over a prolonged period of
time is what changes the alignment and shape of the mouth.
Similarly, the doctor of chiropractic utilizes special
equipment like the
Posture Pump to lift, decompress, and
reshape the spine. The posture pump is a posture
retraining/decompression
appliance that inflates the neck and back into their
proper curved shapes, applying pressure-over-time.
The posture pump can be used at your chiropractor's office
or at home to help promote the proper curves of the spine
during the third phase of postural rehabilitation.
