Choose the right therapy!
R.I.C.E. Treatment Method- The R.I.C.E. treatment
method is one of the most popular techniques for treating
minor injuries where swelling occurs. This treatment
method is recommended for minor strains, sprains, joint
aches and other soft tissue injuries or discomforts. The R.I.C.E. treatment method should be used at intervals of
four to six hours for up to 72 hours following an injury.
Always consult your healthcare professional.
The method is as follows:
Rest: Rest the injured body part
for the first 24-72 hours following an injury. Use it only
as much as can be tolerated and avoid any activities that
cause pain.
Ice: Apply a cold pack to the
injured area for 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of
rest. Repeat this three to four times daily.
Compression: Apply pressure to the
area with a wrap or extremity brace to reduce swelling. Be
careful not to wrap too tightly; if you feel pain or
tingling, loosen the wrap or brace.
Elevation: Keep the injured body
part elevated, above the level of your heart, as much as
possible during the first 72 hours.
Cold Therapy
Cold therapy works by constricting blood
vessels, resulting in a decrease in blood flow to the area
of application. This helps to decrease swelling and
promote healing. Cold therapy also helps to numb nerve
endings, preventing them from transmitting signals of pain
to the brain. Cold therapy is recommended for the first 72
hours following acute injuries, trauma resulting from
surgery or with swelling. Apply a cold pack to the
affected area for 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of
rest. Repeat this process three to four times daily until
swelling subsides. Check skin frequently to make sure it
is not too cold. Always consult your healthcare
professional.
Heat Therapy
Heat therapy works by opening blood
vessels, causing an increase in blood flow to the area of
application. This helps to relax muscles and decrease
pain. Heat therapy is recommended for chronic discomforts,
including muscle stiffness and soreness. Apply a warm pack
to the affected area for 20 minutes, followed by 20
minutes of rest. Repeat this process three to four times
daily until stiffness and soreness subside. Check skin
frequently to make sure it is not too hot. Do not use heat
therapy on areas with poor circulation or decreased
sensation, or areas with bruising or swelling. If swelling
is present, apply cold therapy to the affected area until
swelling subsides. Always consult your healthcare
professional.
